Another interoperability trend is compliance with the 21st Century Cures Act, which requires that healthcare providers grant patients remote access to their medical records via application programming interfaces (APIs). The Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology has also established the API Conditions of Certification to set specific requirements on certified API developers for transparency about the business and technical documentation necessary to interact with their certified API technology.
